A short guide
for Aromatherapy Newbies
All you aromatherapy newbies out there don't be afraid. Stop hiding from your closet and start exploring
the world of aromatherapy. The benefits outweigh whatever social stigma you have on aromatherapy.
This is not exclusive
for those rich, pompous people who do this because they can afford it and have all the time in the world to do it. On the
contrary, aromatherapy is more for hard working people like us. We are the ones whose body and soul needs some relaxation,
uplifting, and rejuvenation.
Aromatherapy, however, is not a walk in the park. There are certain do's and don'ts that you need
to follow to maximize the benefits and avoid whatever possible risks there are.
Risks? Yes, there are a few undesirables when using
aromatherapy essential oils but that is mostly due to improper use. Some are actually used as perfume or massage oils, applying
them liberally on the skin.
You must take care doing this especially when applying undiluted essential oils. Some essential oils like
orange or peppermint cause irritation. Diluting the essential oil in a carrier oil (such as soya been, safflower, wheat germ,
sweet almond oil, avocado, and olive oil) is always recommended when using it for external applications including aromatherapy
bath and massage.
For
internal application, however, I give you this advice: Don't take essential oils without first consulting your physician.
It may lead to something worse so don't go mixing essential oils in your tea or drink.
Okay, now on to the good stuff. As a newbie
in aromatherapy, it is easy to get lost in all the different essential oils out on the market today. You need to learn how
to distinguish from the fake essential oils and genuine ones.
The best way to avoid the inconvenience is to go to a reputable store. That
could be the easiest solution for now but you will eventually learn the tricks of the trade as you get more accustomed and
knowledgeable to aromatherapy.
Here's a good tip. When buying essential oils, avoid those brands with rubber tops covers. There's
a good chance that they're not as pure as they claim. Since essential oils are very concentrated, they can dissolve or
turn rubber tops into gum.
To get you started, it would be best to begin with the more common and much simpler essential oil blends like
lavender and chamomile. Another good combination is orange and grapefruit, which by the way, gives your body that energized
feel.
Actually,
there are still a couple of things that you need to learn as an aromatherapy newbie. But the warnings and tips mentioned can
get you going for the time being.
A dose of aromatherapy history
Described as a way of healing through the use of oils derived from
various plants to aid physiological and psychological well being, aromatherapy is considered as one of the oldest practices
out there.
Studies show that aromatherapy through the use of various oils has been practiced for thousands of years.
However, it is only in the 20th century that the term "aromatherapy" started being used.
Experts say that the people
in China were the first ones to utilize plants with aromatic and therapeutic properties for a person's well-being. The
Chinese did this by burning dried plant extracts in the form of incense to help achieve balance and harmony.
Years after that, aromatherapy
was traced to the Egyptian culture where they invented a machine that extracts crude and oil from cedar wood, myrrh, cinnamon,
nutmeg, and clove and was used to embalm dead people.
From that, Egyptians are said to have discovered infused oils and other herbal preparations that
are still used for spiritual, aesthetic, and medicinal purposes. A machine with variations depending on the need and the plant
type to be extracted was also invented by the early civilizations of India and Persia (now Iran).
With the progress of Egyptians, Greeks
also made variations in terms of healing using plants. In fact, they also acknowledged the benefits of plant extracts in the
field of healing.
Because
of the great potentials of plant extracts, even Hippocrates known as the "Father of Medicine" tried experimenting
on it to achieve medicinal and aromatic benefits.
Megallus, a Greek perfumer also discovered "megaleion," a fatty-oil from the plant myrrh
which is known not only for its great aroma but also because of its anti-inflammatory properties that can heal various skin
conditions.
Romans
also made experimentations on plant extractions but were more focused on fragrance and not on the essential oils. The 11th
century has marked a major movement in the emergence of essential oils with the discovery of a cooling pipe that is coiled
by Avicenna.
In
the 12th century, Hildegard of Germany focused on lavender and its medicinal and therapeutic properties. The 13th century
opened the doors for the public consumption of the essential oils with the birth of the pharmaceutical industry.
In the 14th century, herbal
preparations using mainly essential oils somehow helped fight the plague during the Black Death. The 15th to 19th century
focused more on the discovery of other means of extracting plant extracts and the types of plants that have medicinal properties.
The 20th century paved
the way for the booming of aromatherapy when Ren-Maurice Gattefoss, a French chemist invented the term and studied the medicinal
uses and benefits of essential oils.
Today, aromatherapy comes not only in the form of essential oils but also in other precuts such as
incense, candles, bath and body products and many more.
Aromatherapy and its benefits
Aromatherapy is one of the healing arts that has enjoyed immense popularity
in recent years. This is perhaps because of the medical studies that have cropped up regarding its supposed health benefits.
It is known
to relieve stress and relax the body. That is why many stores in the malls and even lounge areas in hotels have aromatherapy
candles. They believe that they can help relax their clients by using them in their homes.
According to studies, aromatherapy can help
relieve headaches and muscle pains especially those who are just having psychosomatic symptoms.
When you say psychosomatic, this means
the aches and pains are brought on by either mental or emotional causes and don't have any physical basis at all.
Lying at the heart of
aromatherapy are the essential oils. These oils are the ones being used to supply the aroma. Essential oils are natural oils
that come from plants. Oils are extracted from their different parts and then processed and bottled.
Jasmine and rose for instance come from
the leaves of jasmine and rose plants. There are however plants that produce different essential oils for its different parts.
One example of this plant is the Orange Tree, which can produce different oils from its flowers and all other parts.
These oils have substances
that can be therapeutic. It is said that these oils have antiseptic properties. This means that they can be used to get rid
of bacteria and cleanse the body of germs.
Essential oils in aromatherapy are also known to stimulate the immune system, helping the body fight
off infection and illnesses. The immune system is that part of the body that protects us from sickness.
Another benefit of essential oils in
aromatherapy is skin cleansing. It can be used to clean wounds, cuts, and abrasions. Some oils are also used to treat burns
and skin problems. However, you must be cautious when it comes to applying these oils onto the skin.
Some people may be allergic to these
essential oils or their skin may be sensitive. It is good to just do a skin patch test wherein you will be applying a small
amount of the essential oil on skin that is often hidden by cloth.
This will serve as a test area where you can see if you have bad reaction to
the essential oil. If you are allergic to it, your skin will become red and swollen after about 12 hours.
Aromatherapy for Pregnant Women
The benefits that many
people derive from aromatherapy has been known for many years. It was only given a name in the 1920s in France.
The Oil
The essential oil used in the process
is a product of distillation. This method requires a long period of time where the oil is derived from botanical elements.
Through this process, the essential oil becomes intoxicating, concentrated and fragrant. The oil must be diluted in water
or other chosen diffusers, or else it may cause skin irritation.
Relax During Pregnancy
Pregnant women can benefit from the oil by mixing it with water and using it
to bathe. This relaxes your body and gives you a soothing feeling. You can also apply some oil in the shower if you prefer.
Place the oil at the back of the shower.
Another way to relax and enjoy the soothing feeling of this kind of oil is by mixing it with jojoba
oil. You can use this combination to massage all over your body to remove the aches that can be caused by the heaviness of
your baby in the womb.
Just
make sure to consult your doctor before doing the abovementioned to make sure that it's safe and will cause no complications
with your situation.
For
Babies
The
essential oil can also be applied to babies. Make sure that it is diluted to avoid irritation. Touch therapy has been practiced
for ages. Use a few drops of your own mixture to massage gently all over your baby's body.
This can be a great relaxation technique
for your babies. This will also be a great bonding moment for parents and their babies. You'll see how your offspring
will learn to calm down and relax in their own way through your touch and the effect of the oil.
Air Freshener
The oil has a scent that can also relax
and can act as an air freshener. You can use the oil mixed with water to spread the scent in your vehicles and in your homes.
There are other fragrances
that can be diffused in the oil to produce different scents. The popular ones are lavender, chamomile, sage among others.
Use aromatherapy when
you are an expectant mom and you will really appreciate the calming effects that it will have on your body. Relive your tension
through the massage and learn to relax. This will prepare you for your labor while calming the baby inside your belly.
Use aromatherapy for an
easy pregnancy. By being pampered with relaxation techniques, you will surely appreciate the state you are in and focus on
the excitement of the arrival of a new born in your family.
Aromatherapy: Perfect for Teens
Teenagers suffer from a lot of stresses brought about by their lifestyle and
the activities that they become involved in. Aromatherapy will be beneficial for this age group for many reasons.
The hormones of teenagers
are sensitive. That is why essential oils are better than over the counter types for massage purposes. Without precaution,
other types of oils can cause mood swings, from extreme depression to uncontrollable anger.
Teenage Girls
You can call it a girl thing when they
can be utilized at moments when friends bond together. This will really be a fun experience and activity especially when done
in the company of friends.
Teenage girls go through a lot of physical changes during this period. For sure, this process whether used
in massages or any form of relaxation, will be beneficial to soothe your worries away.
Girls will always be girls. You will love the
scent and the therapeutic feeling that this process will be able to make you feel. This will take your mind away even for
a while with the usual problems that you encounter as part of your development.
Manage your stress, forget about the heartaches, even
for a while, as you soothe your nerves with this type of therapy.
Teenage Boys
Teenage boys can also use the process as they are also going through some physical
changes. They also go through different problems, not similar to the girls, but close enough. At this period, they are active
in sports and other outdoor activities, making them susceptible to strain and stress.
You can't tell these young men that such
a process is trendy. They will opt to use it when they know about the effects, the good and calming effects that it can do
for them.
Contemporary
Use
Aside
from relieving stress, this tool can also be applied by the teenage group as replacement for over the counter treatment for
acnes and pains like headaches and muscle tensions.
This can also solve your problems regarding dry skin. This is especially true when the oil is combined
with neroli and rose. Teenagers really will benefit from this technique.
You can use aromatherapy to keep your skin fairly smooth. Use this as part
of your daily skin regimen. This will surely make you feel good as you see the good effects that it can do for your skin.
Grow wiser and healthier by taking care of your body inside and out.
Aromatherapy the basics
You have candles at home and you enjoy the relaxing scent of lavender in your
lotion. You may even practice aromatherapy in your own room or at the simplest put potpourri in your living room to enjoy
that fresh smell.
Yet
although you have done all this, can you really say that you know what aromatherapy is? And do you even have to know about
aromatherapy in order to do it? Yes!
Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils found in plants and placing them in various materials that
will help diffuse their scent. Some use candles and light them up while others have diffusers at home that can fill a room
with refreshed scents.
Aromatherapy
has become really popular in recent years, brought on by the fact that a lot of medical studies, have proven its efficacy
in helping the muscles of the body relax and de-stress. It has also been shown to ease headaches and body pains without a
massage.
Uses
Essential oils are extracted
from plants. They have a wide variety of uses. One use is of course as a scent in candles or in potpourri. This is where the
aroma comes from when you practice aromatherapy. Some essential oils are also used in lotions and in other toiletries, sometimes
even in perfumes.
This
is of course not to be mistaken as the fragrant oils, which are synthetically made. Fragrant oils are chemicals that only
copy the scent of the essential oils unlike essential oils that are purely natural.
Because they are all natural, they are used not only
for aromatherapy but also for the skin. These oils are applied on the skin to treat burns, cuts and abrasions. Some are even
used for skin problems.
Oils in aromatherapy can be mixed with what is called a carrier oil like jojoba or almond. This is because
essential oils can be very potent and may harm the skin when directly applied.
Storage
But don't think that essential oils in aromatherapy can be used anytime. They also dry up and
becomes stale. Essential oils should be properly stored in a cool dark place to avoid or at the most reduce the possibility
of spoilage.
It
is also a good idea to buy essential oils that are stored in glass bottles rather than in plastic ones as it is less likely
for them to deteriorate. When stored properly, oils may last for about a year.
Aromatherapy do's and don'ts
Although aromatherapy might seem easy
to do, it is not always safe especially if you don't have enough knowledge and experience. If you are new to aromatherapy
and you want to ensure your safety as well of your properties and your family, here are some aromatherapy do's and don'ts
that you always have to bear in mind.
Aromatherapy do's
If you follow these pieces of advice from aromatherapy experts, you can ensure that you will get
the results that you want:
1. Do read a lot of references on aromatherapy. This is very important because it will give you the most basic
information that you need in order to be successful. Ideal references for aromatherapy include aromatherapy books, magazines,
and pamphlets.
You
can also get valuable pieces of information by visiting various websites that talk about aromatherapy. If you have plenty
of time, you may want to enroll in an aromatherapy class, which can either be online or in a traditional classroom set up.
2. Do careful selection
when buying essential oils and other aromatherapy accessories. Since essential oils are the primary medium used in aromatherapy,
make sure that you are getting the best option possible. Make sure that you are getting the "purest ones" because
they are more effective compared to those that are mixed with other oils.
To ensure that you are getting quality essential oils and other aromatherapy
accessories or products, buy them only from reputable makers and stores. When shopping online, make sure that you know what
you are buying to avoid purchasing fake ones. It is also ideal to read comments and testimonials about the product before
finally buying it.
3.
Do proper storage for your essential oils. To maintain their efficacy, essential oils should be stored in dark glasses preferably
amber and cobalt blue colored ones and should be placed in cool and dark storage areas.
Today, a majority of aromatherapy stores are
offering wooden boxes with hinges as well as holders that are made of wood that is ideal for storing essential oils.
Aromatherapy don'ts
1. Don't purchase
essential oils that are contained in rubber glass that have dropper tops. Because of the high concentration of essential oils,
rubber can ruin the efficacy of the oil.
2. Don't buy essential oils from people you don't know. The purity of essential oils are
important to achieve their benefits, if you buy them from people, say street vendors or merchants at various trade fairs,
chances are you aren't getting high quality ones.
3. Don't confuse "perfume oils" with "essential oils." Knowing that you are
using the right medium is very crucial in buying essential oils for aromatherapy because this will ensure of the therapeutic
benefits that you are supposed to get.
The best thing to consider when buying essential oils is checking the label intently. By doing this,
you can have the basic information on the product and you can also ensure that you are getting the real thing.
Being a smart aromatherapy
shopper
Being
a smart aromatherapy shopper entails a lot of responsibilities. It means that you have to conduct some research about aromatherapy
and everything that has anything to do with it before rushing into an aromatherapy store or health shop.
This research should include what aromatherapy
products are safe to use depending on the awareness level of the person as well as on his or her needs. The research should
also include tips on how to identifying authentic aromatherapy products and the best places to buy these products.
Once you have gathered
information on the aromatherapy basics, you can now proceed to the exciting yet challenging part; shopping for the items.
Shopping for aromatherapy items can be done in two ways either online or by going to these specialty stores and shops that
offer the product.
When
you are shopping for aromatherapy products online, it is very important to check if the site you are visiting is reputable
or not. You can check this by simply reading blogs and testimonials about the site.
You may also check its reputation if it has affiliations
with stores and aroma therapists that can prove all the claims of the products they offer. When shopping for aromatherapy
products online, don't splurge on buying items on one site or one owner.
For the first transaction, buy at least one of each product they offer that
you need and try them on. Check if the essential oils are pure and if the other products contain quality oils. Also check
the overall appearance of the product and take down some observations on it.
If you do this, you will determine which are the best products that the site
offers and which are not. Make sure that you add up the address of the site/s to your "favorites" so you won't
have a hard time searching for it over and over again.
If you are buying aromatherapy products at physical stores, make sure that you know where to buy
them. The best places to buy quality aromatherapy products may include aromatherapy stores, health stores, and shops that
offer natural products.
If you buy from these stores, there is a higher possibility that you'll get quality aromatherapy products.
One of the advantages if you buy from these stores is that you can always return the product if it has false claims.
You can also buy aromatherapy
products in bazaars and trade fairs but the quality of these are not always guaranteed.
Dangers of essential oils of aromatherapy on
the skin
Aromatherapy
has many benefits to the body. This is perhaps why a lot of people are starting to use them. Many companies have incorporated
aromatherapy into their offices to help their employees fight off stress.
Some hospitals also put some aromatherapy scents in their recovery rooms to
calm patients. Restaurants are even joining the bandwagon, putting diffusers inside so that customers can enjoy an inviting
and relaxing ambiance.
The
success of aromatherapy lies in the use of essential oils. These oils provide the aroma or the scent that relaxes the body.
These come from plants. Oils are extracted from the different parts like the leaves, the roots, the bark and even the stem.
Some plants
even produce different oils from different parts of the plant. Some, on the other hand, can only give one essential oil like
the jasmine or the lavender.
But although these oils are basically beneficial and advantageous to the body, there are still instances when
they can be hazardous to ones health too. This is because although these essential oils are natural, too much of it can be
toxic, especially if it is applied directly to the skin.
Essential oils are known for their antiseptic properties. It is also used to
treat cuts and burns as well as a variety of skin problems. But remember that not all people can actually use essential oils.
Some have really sensitive skin that may not react well with the oils.
So before you apply them on your skin, make sure that you are not allergic
to them. You can do this by doing a skin patch test wherein you will apply a small amount of the oil on the skin to find out
if it will react.
Remember
that only a small amount should be used as this is just a trial. A pinch or less than a drop is enough for you to see whether
you are allergic or not.
Often, the skin patch test is done on areas that are not often seen or those that are covered by clothes.
That way, you know that it will not be seen should your skin react to the essential oil.
Usually, a person will have to wait for about
12 hours before they can see some swelling and redness. If there is, that means you are allergic to it and should not apply
it on your skin. You may also want to avoid using that particular essential oil for your aromatherapy.
Dangers of essential oils used in aromatherapy
Aromatherapy is good for
the body. Many research and studies have been done to prove just how much the vapors from the essential oils being used in
aromatherapy are beneficial to ones health and well being.
Its primary benefit lies in the fact that it can soothe the muscles and relax
the body. Essential oils and the process of aromatherapy in particular is often used as a tool for people to de-stress themselves.
It is also
used to ease headaches and several aches and pains, which for most people, are caused not by any physical disorder but an
emotional or mental one.
Some essential oils are also great for combating sickness as they are known to have antiseptic properties
and are immune system stimulants. There are also a variety that is great for the skin and are good in treating cuts and burns
as well as skin problems.
But although these essential oils are beneficial to the body, there are instances when they can be dangerous.
Not all people can use essential oils or practice aromatherapy. Some have allergies while others are just plain not cut out
to use them. Here are some of the instances when aromatherapy should not be used.
1. People who have health problems like asthma, high
blood pressure and epilepsy are advised not to use essential oils or practice aromatherapy unless they are under the supervision
of their doctors.
That
is why it is important that you tell your doctors of your plans or of your habits when having a check. That way, they will
be able to advise you about it.
2. People who are under medications should also avoid using aromatherapy. Essential oils, as mentioned before,
can relax the muscles and the body. If you are taking medication that also relaxes the body, this can be a double whammy.
Make sure that your medications can be used alongside aromatherapy. Ask your doctor about it.
3. There are certain oils that are not
good for women who are pregnant, particularly when they are in the first trimester.
But to be really sure, pregnant women should avoid
these oils for the duration of the pregnancy: Arnica, Camphor, Santolina, Sassafras, Pennyroyal, Wormseed, Spanish Broom,
Wormwood, and Mustard. Safe oils are lavender, jasmine, rose, chamomile and Sandalwood.
4. There are essential oils on the market that
are not really what they seem. Some use poisonous and toxic plants as sources. When buying essential oils for aromatherapy,
make sure that you only buy from reputable stores and manufacturers .
Different ways to use essential oils in aromatherapy
Aromatherapy has become very popular
especially with health-conscious people. It is believed that aromatherapy can help relieve stress and relax the muscles and
the body. It is also a known antiseptic and an immune system stimulant. This means that it can help the body fight off infections
and illnesses.
Aromatherapy
also helps in the healing of wounds and in cell regeneration, causing tissues to grow and replenish itself. This is why some
topical herbal medicines incorporate essential oils into their products.
But what lies at the heart of aromatherapy is the essential oils, which provide
the scent. Essential oils are extracted from the various parts of the plants, from the leaves to the flower petals. Oils can
even be extracted from the peelings of the fruits. This is perhaps why dried leaves and fruits also have scents.
There are many ways to
use essential oils and blends. Like with fragrances, oils can be combined and blended with each other. When complementary
scents are blended together, the benefit can even be better than when using just one scent.
These are dispensed through different materials
and different ways. Here are some of the materials that are used to spread the fragrance of the essential oils like in aromatherapy.
Diffusers
These are
the materials that are used to force the aromatic molecules to combine with the air. Often these diffusers are electronically
based.
Examples of these diffusers are the bulb rings, electric-based lamps and fans and the nebulizers. Nebulizers
are the most effective in diffusing the oils but can be more expensive.
Misting bottle
If you want a more inexpensive way of diffusing
the oils, try the misting bottle. The disadvantage is that you need to do the diffusing manually. This means that you have
to spray it yourself. Misting bottles are made by combining the essential oils with distilled water. When spraying, make sure
that you do it above the head to avoid having the mist getting into your face.
Inhalers
Inhalers work by placing the essential oil or the blend together with dead
sea salts or Epsom salt into a small glass bottle. The bottle should have a wide mouth, where you can slowly inhale the vapors
for about 15 to 20 times.
Another way to do this kind of aromatherapy is to make it a little more indirect with the essential oils dropped
on a tissue or a handkerchief and inhale it from there.
Disproving myths and hype on aromatherapy
Aromatherapy is considered as one of the oldest
means of alternative healing. This is because the process dates back as early as the 11th century when the distillation process
used to extract oils from plants was discovered.
Centuries after that major discovery, more and more people started using aromatherapy not only as
a form of relaxation but for healing stress and tension-related illnesses.
However, contentions when it comes to affectivity are still all over various
mediums such as books, magazines and Internet blogs. If you are new to aromatherapy and want to know if the hype on its affectivity
is true, then you must be willing to conduct some research about it yourself or have some time to read various researches
and papers that talk about it.
Aside from that, you should also be willing to try a certain aromatherapy procedure to know for yourself if
it works or not.
The
following are just some of the hypes that are related to aromatherapy, it is up to you to believe if the claims are true or
not.
1.
All aromatherapy products can heal a person. Aside from essential oils, there are so many aromatherapy products available
on the market that are supposed to aid alternative healing. However, not all of these are proven to be effective.
This is because many of
these products such as candles or bath and body items do not contain pure essential oils that are crucial in achieving therapeutic
benefits.
2.
Aromatherapy can cure major illnesses and psychological problems. Although some aromatherapy procedures are proven to have
great effect on people with medical conditions, it doesn't directly help a serious illness. What aromatherapy does is
helps lessen the stress and depression being felt by a person.
Once this stress or depression is somehow alleviated, the person who is taking
regular medication or undergoing a certain medical process can better respond to the treatments being given because he or
she has a positive outlook because of aromatherapy.
3. Aromatherapy does not have valid uses. Although aromatherapy is considered as an alternative means
of healing, it doesn't mean that it doesn't have valid uses. For people who are living under great stress, aromatherapy
can improve his or her life tremendously by giving him or her other options of relaxation.
Aside from being an effective means of relaxation,
aromatherapy can also be helpful in relieving stress as well as in giving the person a positive outlook on life.
DIY Aromatherapy
Just like what the title
says, DIY aromatherapy is a doable endeavor and can be practiced by everyone with the right ingredients, techniques, or approaches.
The key element in aromatherapy is the essential oil. That's basically what makes aromatherapy, aromatherapy.
However, the costs of
essential oils can be quite steep depending on the kind, blend and brand of oil. So the best way of enjoying aromatherapy
is finding a cheap way of acquiring essential oils.
In preparing for a DIY aromatherapy, one needs to get all the ingredients together. We
need the oil and some other components that will help make everything a beneficial experience. Essential oils are highly concentrated
extracts from plants and flowers which give out this distinct and strong aroma.
The aroma is what relieves us of emotional strain,
stress, and rejuvenates our body. The oil is the therapeutic in aromatherapy and massage therapies.
As a suitable alternative for essential
oils, we need to go directly to the plants. Choose from a number of herbs available in your yard or even buy some from the
store. Get those herbs together and crush them up. We need about three tablespoons of crushed herbs to make this work.
After crushing the herbs,
place them in a container and add a pint of vegetable oil flowed by a tablespoon of vinegar. It is advisable to place the
container somewhere the sun can reach it or somewhere considerably warm.
You have to be patient. This is not a one day deal. After you set aside the
vinegar, herb and vegetable mixture, you have to leave it for at least two weeks in that condition. After the first week,
you can open the container and add a few more herbs to it if you like. After the second week, you are ready to strain the
leaves and other gunk from your mixture.
Bottle the essential oil in a glass container or a porcelain one. Do not cover the bottle with plastic
or rubber caps. The essential oils can eat through the plastic and can even dissolve rubber. Moreover, be sure that you store
the bottled oils in a dark, cool place.
If the above procedure will not do due to time constraints and lack of ingredients, then you have
to accept the fact that you will have to settle on commercially available essential oils. These are quite expensive.
You can purchase pure
essential oils in health stores, and specialized shops. They are often sold in vials. Among the most common essential oils
in aromatherapy include eucalyptus oil, lavender essential oil, and tea tree essential oil.
When preparing for essential oils for aromatherapy,
one needs to remember that essential oils are highly volatile oils, which means they easily evaporate.
Essential oils in aromatherapy: what
you should know
Aromatherapy
has enjoyed immense popularities in recent years. Candles and oils can now be found in stores across the states. This is perhaps
because of the growing consciousness on health through scents.
It is believed that aromatherapy can help relieve muscle pains and headaches
as well as relieve stress.
But although you have probably bought an aromatherapy kit in recent years, you probably do not know a thing
about it. Aromatherapy is the process of using essential oils that are extracted from various plants and their parts including
their petals, their seeds, their barks and leaves.
Even the fruit peelings, resins, twigs, and roots are used for
Aromatherapy. These essential oils are often referred to as the soul of the plants as it contains the scent that each plant
has.
Some plants will have different oils from its different parts like the orange tree while others like peppermint
have the same oils from all of its parts. Some oils can only be extracted from the petals such as with jasmine or rose.
Essential oils however
should not be likened to fragrant oils that are synthetically made. These fragrant oils are made from a mixture of chemicals
that only copy the scent of the real thing. Essential oils on the other hand come naturally from the plant itself.
Sometimes, though, essential
oils are combined with fragrant oils in making perfumes. However in aromatherapy, only essential oils are used. This is because
natural oils are more beneficial to the body. It also promotes health and wellbeing.
Aromatherapy, particularly essential oils are known
for its antiseptic properties and its ability to stimulate the immune system. This can vastly help fight health problems brought
on by virus and bacteria. And because it helps stimulate the immune system, it can help the body fight off sickness.
Aromatherapy makes use
of essential oils because they are easily absorbed by the body and of course its liquid format allows it to evaporate into
the air. And because essential oils are very concentrated, you often only need a few drops in order to get the desired scent.
One must make sure though
that what you are using are of the best quality. This can be affected by a multitude of factors, one of which is plant source,
how it is harvested and the extraction process.
Better essential oils are also extracted from organically-grown plants compared to those that have
had pesticides applied to them.
Essential oils in aromatherapy
Essential oils are the heart and soul of aromatherapy. Whether they are candles, light fixtures,
potpourri, or cloth, essential oils provide the scent that aromatherapy uses to ease pain and relax the body.
Essential oils come from
plants. These oils are extracted from the various parts of the plants including the bark, the branches, the leaves, roots,
the fruits, the buds, the resin, the twigs and even its fruit peels.
That is how abundant these oils are in the environment. This is perhaps why
potpourri, which come from dried parts of trees, have scents of their own.
Some plants have essential oils only in one part. Examples of these are the
rose and the jasmine whose essential oils can be found in their leaves. Some have essential oils in various parts.
Some even have different
oils in different parts. An example of this is the orange tree which can produce different oils from its different parts.
Because they are naturally
extracted, a real natural oil will be very concentrated. You only need a drop in order to fill up the room with the aromatic
scent. However, there are pseudo-essential oils that are made from a combination of essential oils and fragrant oils.
Fragrant oils are oils
that are synthetically-made through chemicals. These are produced by copying the scents of different essential oils. In fact,
fragrant oils are the basis for a lot of colognes and perfumes on the market.
Although essential oils and synthetic fragrant oils have the same scent, thanks
to science. Each kind elicit different reactions from people. Chemicals from the fragrant oils are often irritating when concentrated.
Some can even elicit a slight headache.
Essential oils on the other hand can ease muscle pains and relieve stress as well promote wellbeing.
This has been proven in so many studies. Essential oils are also naturally concentrated and just a few drops is enough to
fill up a large room.
One thing
to remember though when buying essential oils for aromatherapy is to make sure that you have the quality oils in your hands.
You see, although they are all natural, some have better effects on people.
Among the factors that affect the quality of the essential oil is the plant
source, the method of harvest and the method of extraction. How it is made and what chemicals are put into it before or after
the harvest can also affect its quality.

Guidelines in using and buying aromatherapy
diffusers
Today,
more and more aromatherapy accessories are available to the consuming public. Among these accessories, the most popular ones
are aromatherapy diffusers and nebulizers. There are so many types, kinds, styles, sizes, and colors to choose from on the
market.
But,
before you use or buy a specific aromatherapy diffuser or nebulizer, make sure that you are meticulous about the product's
requirements and specifications as well as its safety details. This is to ensure that you are buying a quality product that
can aid your relaxation and healing.
Also, by knowing the specifications of a certain product, you will have an idea if it can meet your
expectations and needs.
The
following are some of the diffusers and nebulizers that are commonly seen in aromatherapy stores and health centers:
1. Lamp ring. This is
a ring that is made out of terracotta set directly to a light bulb. The grooved lip holds the essential oil while the light
bulb provides the heat needed to diffuse the aroma of the oil in the room.
One of the advantages of lamp rings is that it is cheaper compared to other
types of diffusers. However, it is a fire hazard especially if the oil gets into the light. Chances are, the light bulb will
break and may cause fire.
2. Clay pot diffusers. These are cute terracotta pots that come in small pyramids and other shapes. This type
of essential oil diffuser has an opening for the oil and has a cork, which enables the content to permeate and spread across
the room. The fragrance or the aroma will depend on the amount of essential oil inside the pot.
This is an ideal diffuser because it
is easy to use, inexpensive, comes in many styles, and does not require the use of batteries or electricity. However, the
aroma is short lived so it is hard to keep the fragrance in the room for a long time.
3. Candle diffusers. This utilizes heat to diffuse
the aroma across the room. What you do is light up a candle for less than 10 minutes and then put it out. You then place a
drop of essential oil in it and relight it to spread the aroma in the air.
Usually made of metal or ceramic, candle diffusers have an opening in the candle
and a small bowl for essential oil storage. If you are into style, candle diffusers are ideal for your aromatherapy sessions
because these come is many shapes, colors, and styles and they are also affordable.
However, more care is needed for this type of diffuser
because it can easily cause a fire or once the heat from the candle is absorbed by the essential oil which is highly flammable.
Hazards in the buying
and using of essential oils in aromatherapy
Aromatherapy is believed to help the body relax and de-stress. In fact, it is being used by companies
to help their employees lower their stress levels. Some restaurants also use aromatherapy to create a soothing ambiance for
their customers.
According
to studies, aromatherapy can also relieve headaches and muscle pains. It is also very effective in ridding the body of psychosomatic
pains, which are pains that often do not have any physical cause. Rather, it is believed that these pains are more mental
and emotional than anything else.
Essential oils, which are used in aromatherapy, also have antiseptic properties and are said to be
immune system stimulants. This means that they can help the body get rid of bacteria and fight sickness. They are also used
on the skin for the treatment of skin problems and even cuts and burns.
But no matter how beneficial these essential oils are and aromatherapy in general,
they can become hazardous when used and manufactured improperly.
Remember that in everything care should be done in handling a material even
if it is supposedly beneficial. Here are some potential problems that you may encounter when using essential
oils in aromatherapy.
1.
Some essential oils may come from toxic and poisonous plants, which are unknowingly used for extraction. So before you buy
essential oils, make sure that they are made by a reputable company.
Research on the brand and as much as possible, look for seals of its authenticity.
Some manufacturers may not give you a pure blend. Instead, combining other plant sources with original sources.
2. Essential
oils may be beneficial in small amounts but some may pose dangers when they are used in high concentrations. That is why it
is important that people read the instructions that comes with the essential oil vial.
If the instructions say that
you need to use just one drop, then use just one drop. You should not use more because too much can become toxic.
3. Although aromatherapy
is beneficial to health, doctors discouraged people taking medicines or with health problems like high blood pressure, asthma
or epilepsy to use essential oils.
Should you decide to use aromatherapy, make sure that you ask your physician first. That way, he
or she can recommend other alternatives should it cause a problem with the essential oils vapors.
Health risks of aromatherapy
Years before the emergence
of modernization, aromatherapy through the use of essential oils derived from different plants has been used by people for
healing, relaxation, and restoration of energy and overall health. But, with the dawning of modern civilizations, this practice
has slowly disappeared.
Years
after due to the trend of healing using natural and traditional practices the use of aromatherapy is being more and more accepted
because of its affectivity. Now, this practice of healing is now being regarded as a holistic therapy that helps heal not
only some physical pains of a person's body but also the emotions and mind as well.
Despite the many advantages and benefits of aromatherapy,
some people disapprove of using them as a means of healing because of its potential health risks.
The following are just some of the health
risks that are closely associated with the use aromatherapy specifically with essential oils.
1. The use of essential oils in aromatherapy
can lead to burnt skin. This is very true especially if too much is applied directly on the skin during massage. Because of
a high concentration of the essential oils, the upper dermis of the skin can easily be damaged and may result in varying degrees
of burns.
2.
Using poor quality essential oils can lead to painful and itchy rashes. The number one rule when using essential oils is the
"purity" of the product. Experts say that the right concentration of quality essential oils along with the right
amount may bring beneficial effects but if it is used too much and with the wrong concentration, it can lead to disaster.
3. The wrong use of essential
oils can lead to a variety of sicknesses. The most common usage of essential oils is by inhaling them. When done improperly,
it can lead to illnesses that can be related to the respiratory system.
4. Essential oils can cause miscarriage in pregnant women. Experts say essential
oils derived from fennel seeds, cedar wood, basil, sage, clary, jasmine, marjoram, juniper, lavender, myrrh, and thyme can
cause miscarriage in women because these plants contain properties that can affect the fetus in the womb.
5. People with epilepsy should also avoid
using certain essential oils. Oils that are derived from fennel, sage, champhor, hyssop, and rosemary are believed to contain
a high concentration of properties that can trigger shaking among epileptics.
6. Aromatherapy using essential oils leads to high blood pressure. This is
true especially if used in the wrong amounts and for long periods of time.
Home made aromatherapy
Just like in everything else, modernization has paved the way for making things
easier for people who want to conduct aromatherapy. In fact, you can now make your own aromatherapy variations even in you're
own home.
All
you need to do is to conduct some research on products that you are interested in and look for things inside the home that
you can possibly use in your experiment.
Before anything else, make sure that you have supplies for aromatherapy such as items that will be
used for measuring, such as cups and spoons, means of transferring liquids such as funnels with different sizes, containers
for mixing elements and for proper storage such as bottles or vials, labeling items like stickers, lots of paper towels and
alcohol to clean the area afterwards.
You may also need glass droppers, a pipette, and measuring cups with pour spouts for large quantities
as well as essential oils and carriers like distilled water, vegetable oil, alcohol, vodka, or the more expensive ones including
jojoba, almond, or apricot.
After preparing the necessary supplies, you may start with your homemade aromatherapy.
The following are just some of the aromatherapy
products that you can do inside the confines of your own abode.
1. Aromatherapy massage or body oil. All you need is to combine
50 drops or 1/2 teaspoon of the essential oil of your choice together with 4 ounces of vegetable oil. This can be used to
relax the aching muscles, relieve stress, and encourage normal breathing by directly applying in on the affected area.
2. Aromatherapy compress.
This is considered one of the easiest aromatherapy products out there. All you need is to add at least 5 drops of essential
oil to a cold or hot cup of water and dip a soft cloth on the mixture.
If you want to relieve itchiness, swell, and inflamed body parts use cold compress.
To flush out blemishes on the skin, use hot water to open skin pores and also to relieve strain in the neck due to tightened
muscles.
3.
Aromatherapy foot or hand bath. What you need is to add 10 drops of a chosen essential oil to a part of cold or hot water
in a medium-sized basin. Using your hand or a stirring rod, stir the essential oil evenly to blend well with the water.
When the two are blended,
you may now soak your stiff hands or feet to relieve muscle aches. If you want to relax muscles that are stiff, use cold water
to reduce the swelling. Foot or hand bath is ideal to relive muscle aches because the essential oils can easily enter the
mainstream when the pores are open.

How to stay safe while
using aromatherapy candles
Whether you are shopping for yourself or for another person who is into aromatherapy, it is always best that
you make smart decisions in the things that you will purchase.
Being wise and smart about the choices that you make in buying aromatherapy
products will not only ensure that you will get your moneys worth but also your overall safety or the person you are buying
the products for.
In
aromatherapy, essential oils are one of the most important aspects that should be paid attention to. This is because the purity
of the essential oil as well as the knowledge on how to use it properly will ensure your success in getting the results that
you want.
One
of the most consumed products that contain essential oils is an aromatherapy candle. Although it is easier to use compared
to the direct application of essential oils, using aromatherapy candles can pose a threat and danger to you and your family's
safety once there is lack of precaution while burning it.
To ensure that you will be safe when using aromatherapy candles, here are some
reminders.
1.
Always buy aromatherapy candles that you need. Although the cute and countless designs of aromatherapy candles are quite tempting
to collect, you should restrict yourself in buying those that you don't need.
When buying aromatherapy candles, make sure that you
buy only those that contain essential oils that can help you. If you want to strengthen the immune system, opt for those that
have extracts from eucalyptus. If you have problems with sleeping, buy aromatherapy candles that have sage oil because it
contains properties that aid restful slumber.
If you want to relieve or alleviate stress, use aromatherapy candles with chamomile extracts because
it has properties that help soothe stressed out nerves.

cheaper compared to other aromatherapy products available. So, if you are buying aromatherapy candles, choose those that have
reasonable prices but of quality to ensure that you will reap the benefits that you want.
3. Never, ever leave an aromatherapy candle

you are burning an aromatherapy candle, make sure that you have water at hand or a fire extinguisher beside you to ensure
that there will be no fire.
Also, make sure that no kids are around when burning an aromatherapy candle because they may be tempted to
play with them.

are inspired from ylang ylang, vanilla, neroli, rose, clary sage, and sandalwood.
3. Always buy aromatherapy candles that complement
each other. To avoid nausea caused by too many scents and fragrances, avoid burning candles that do not complement each other.
Knowing the correct aromatherapy
techniques
The
right approach is always the most effective one. The same theory goes with aromatherapy. Having the knowledge of the different
kinds of aromatherapy techniques can be the key in maximizing its healing and rejuvenating effects.
Believe it or not, there are different
ways of using aromatherapy. It is not just simply inhaling some essential oils and waiting for the effects of the aroma to
kick in. No, there are more ways to enjoy the effects of this healing method.
Inhaling the essential oils is not totally wrong. It still is one of the basic
process of how aromatherapy works. But, there are proper ways of preparing the essential oils so their full benefits can be
attained.
Among
these methods include vaporization, steam inhalation, and even aromatic bathing. These three offer an experience that seems
to help people enjoy their aromatherapy sessions to the fullest.
Cosmetic aromatherapy is another technique. This is basically the use of aromatic
materials to make one beautiful according to the cultural standards of their group. It is said that ancient cultures practiced
this technique.
Members
of ancient tribes would carefully mix aromatic herbs, plants or flowers with their own versions of cosmetics and apply the
mixture to their bodies. Some tribes still practice this today.
Another way of using aromatherapy is by combining it with another relaxation
technique, the massage. Aromatherapy massage is being used to heal and revitalize both the body and the soul by applying essential
oils to the skin.
Stress-related
symptoms are often the target aromatherapy massage. The physical stress is relieved by massage techniques while the mind and
inner self is soothed by the aroma of the essential oils.
Yet another usage of aromatherapy is seen in formal medical practice. Medical
aromatherapy, as it is called, uses essential oils to treat conditions that have been diagnosed clinically. The use of essential
oils varies from application to oral prescriptions.
This kind of aromatherapy, however, should only be practiced by clinical therapists, medical doctors
and trained and aptly qualified herbalists who have undergone formal education and have gained the corresponding licenses.
These are the basic aromatherapy
techniques that often are employed by those who practice the craft. Techniques are not just passed down but instead are gained
through learning and training.
Aromatherapy is a method of physical, mental and even spiritual well being, giving the person a revitalized
outlook in life.
Knowing
aromatherapy oils
Aromatherapy
refers to the healing technique that uses aromatic oils extracted and distilled from different plants. Since the ingredients
come from nature, people all over the world have been using them to bring about a feeling of physical well being and psychological
benefits.
To
achieve the affectivity of aromatherapy, many conduct it using aromatherapy oils, which can be "essential oils,"
or "absolute oils." The most common of application of aromatherapy oils is by directly pouring it on the skin.
Aromatherapy oils are
usually poured on the palms and rubbed to the affected area to achieve the desired purpose.
Another means of utilizing aromatherapy oils
is through inhalation. This is done by placing a tiny drop of your chosen aromatherapy oil on a piece facial tissue or soft
cloth and is placed under the nostril to be inhaled.
This can easily soothe the senses of a person especially those that are living quite stressful lives.
Aside from inhaling when placed on a cloth or a tissue, you can reap the benefits of aromatherapy oils through steam inhalation
that involves the use of the aromatherapy oil dropped in bowl of hot water.
Aromatherapy oils when used in conjunction with a carrier oil are also a great
way to aid a relaxing massage or a soothing bath.

also happen through the improper use aromatherapy oils. Before buying or using aromatherapy oils, it is always best to familiarize
yourself with them so you will know the things that you should consider.
1. Know the various types aromatherapy oils. Each kind of aromatherapy oil

aware of its properties to ensure that you will not encounter any accidents or health complications.
2. Always check the container carefully.
In buying aromatherapy oils, the first thing that you should do is to be meticulous about the container. This is because the
container will easily tell you if the product is safe to use and if it is still effective.
(TIP: Never buy aromatherapy oils that are
placed inside plastic containers or bottles because it means that the intrinsic properties of the contents must have been
damaged due to lack of light.)
Choose aromatherapy oils that are placed in colored bottles so you can see their contents easily.
3. Check and double-check
the label of the aromatherapy oil you are planning to buy. Labels contain all the information about the product because the
law mandates it. Don't buy ant that says "perfume" or "fragrance oil" because the contents are not
pure and of high quality.
Learning aromatherapy
There is no denying the popularity of aromatherapy in the field of alternative healing and medicine.
This is because more and more people continue to enjoy its benefits. Also, many people continue to believe in the affectivity
of the healing process because there is an increasing demand and patronage on the products available on the market today.
If you are one of those
who are interested in aromatherapy for personal use or for a business venture, it is best that you educate yourself everything
about it. By doing this, you will ensure that you know the strengths and weaknesses of the healing practice.
Before anything else,
the first thing that you need to learn about aromatherapy is its history.
Why? This is because a quick look on the history will give you an idea how
the process has started, where did it start, who is responsible for its prevalence, when and was it discovered. Through its
history, you can also monitor the movement of the healing process and compare it to the current trends in the aromatherapy
market.
Aside
from the history, you also need to learn about the different mediums used in aromatherapy as well as the different means of
application, usage, and specific benefits to a person.
To learn more on aromatherapy, you can get information and references from:
- Aromatherapy books. These are the best
references you can get for aromatherapy because you can always check and double check information whenever you need to. Today,
more and more books are being published to make the consuming public understand the process of alternative healing.
You can buy thick and
comprehensive books that contain all the information you need for aromatherapy. You can also buy thinner self-help books that
you can bring anywhere whenever you want to access information on aromatherapy. Other reading materials may come in the form
of magazines, leaflets, pamphlets, and modules.
- Self-study. You can learn more about aromatherapy if you decide to study at home. Most aromatherapists
and experts expand and gain more knowledge about this process through self-studying. This process of learning aromatherapy
involves reading information from various resources such as printed and online materials.
Through self-study, you can absorb information
quickly without having to spend much money on aromatherapy crash courses. A person who is undergoing self-study can also utilize
pieces information he or she has learned anytime of the day.
Other means of learning aromatherapy can also be networking or sharing your
knowledge to others, attending local classes administered by aromatherapists with educational and professional backgrounds,
seminars that are conducted and sponsored by aromatherapists and business owners, and by enrolling in comprehensive aromatherapy
programs or courses through distance learning.
Learning to diffuse essential oils in aromatherapy
Aromatherapists, massage therapists, spa owners, and healing arts practitioners
say that it is more agreeable to have aromatherapy diffusers that use no heat compared to those that use heat. This is to
ensure the quality of the scent diffused by the aromatherapy essential oils.
If you are new to aromatherapy, the first thing that you need to learn is how
to use aromatherapy and essential oil diffusers. This is because the proper usage of diffusers will ensure that you will get
the results that you want.
Knowing the process of diffusion
In aromatherapy, the term "diffusion" is the procedure of breaking up essential oils so
the aroma contained in these fragrances will fill the space in the room.
Because there are so many methods that can be used in diffusing essential oils
in aromatherapy, starters should only focus on those that are simple and easy to avoid committing fatal mistakes.
The following are just
some of the diffusion processes you can do even at home:
1. Tissue diffusion. This process of diffusion involves the use of at least
4 drops of essential oil placed on a piece of tissue paper. What you can do is place it in the nearest area possible so the
movement of the aroma in the tissue will spread out across the room. This is very easy to do and can be transported.
However, the aroma in
the tissue might not fill the whole room because the amount is so little.
2. Steam diffusion. What you need here is to boil at least 2 cups of water
and pour it to a bowl with 10 drops of your chosen essential oil. Energizing or relaxing oils are ideal for this process of
diffusion because it can fill up the room with pleasant aroma easily.
Although it can easily fill up the room with nice aroma, this will not last
since the essence will evaporate in the air quickly. The heat in the steam can also destroy elements of the essential oil
and will not produce the therapeutic benefit it supposed to produce.
3. Candle diffusion. This process involves the use of candle and essential
oils. To achieve success in this process, you must leave a candle burning for at least 5 minutes. Then, you can extinguish
the candle and place one drop of chosen essential oil on its melted wax.
After this, you should relight the candle and enjoy a room filled with relaxing
aroma. Although this will ensure a long lasting fragrance, you should be very careful in doing is because essential oils can
be highly flammable.
Massage
in Style Using Aromatherapy
When used in massage, aromatherapy uses plant oils that are concentrated and have gone through the process
of dilution. The product of this method is called the essential oils. This can be used as a combination with water or other
oils and also with lotions.
The limbic system in a human brain is in charge of the emotions and the body's nervous system. It also
controls the hormones and the reaction they have to natural occurrences. The nostrils are connected with the limbic system.
When a person is undergoing
a massage, the aroma of the essential oils is being absorbed by the nostrils that goes straight to the limbic system. This
has a calming effect on the heart that lessens the stress that a person feels.
This also controls the breathing to normal and regulates
the blood pressure. This is also good for your memory. This will also help you in the digestion of food. And this process
makes the immune system stronger. And so the person who is undergoing such becomes healthier.
The essential oil, when absorbed by the
skin, has healing effects that are good for you. It has healing properties that have been proven through time.
Uses of the Massage
The oil can be diffused
with different scents. As a result, the combination will have different effects depending on where it was mixed.
The essential oil plus
eucalyptus and tea tree leaves a decongesting feel. When used with rosemary, it develops a cleansing effect. If you want calmness,
use it with lavender, chamomile and geranium. And it becomes uplifting when used with rosemary and uplifting with rose and
neroli.
The
massage can improve conditions like insomnia and headaches. It is also good for digestive disorders. And this will be beneficial
for pregnant women and also those suffering from PMS or the premenstrual syndrome.
You can apply the oil on yourself or ask someone to
do the massage for you. However you do it, enjoy the process and benefit from the effects that it emulates. As you use the
massage more often, you develop certain likeness for different mixtures.
Bring your favorite combination every time you visit a professional for an
aromatherapy massage. Have it ready at home to be utilized when the need arises. Whichever way, learn to enjoy the different
effects the massage has.
Pamper your body and learn to live the relaxed way through this process. As you get older, you will be really
thankful for whoever invented the process.
Massage Oils Used in Aromatherapy
Massage oils have different effects to those who use them. In aromatherapy,
these oils are being utilized for the effects that they have and also for their scents. The fragrances also vary to suit each
perk of an individual who may want to try it.
The massage oils used in the process must be tried and tested by an individual to know what suits
them best. Different people will suffer different effects from the oils. This happens because the body type differs as well
as their reaction to whatever's applied to them.
To make sure that you will be getting the most out of the massage, you can try a bit of the oil that
you prefer a day at a time. Sooner or later, you will find your perfect match to give you what you've been looking for.
Sweet Almond
Massage therapists love
this massage oil. This has become one of the more popular among all those available on the market. This leaves a slight sticky
feeling to your skin that needs to be reapplied to achieve a smooth feel. Those who are allergic to nuts must also not utilize
this type. But in most cases, this doesn't cause any irritation to its users.
Coconut Oil
If used in massages, coconut oil must be fractionated.
This means that just a fraction of the entirety of the oil will be used. This is more affordable than the other types of massage
oils. This may be the reason why this is also popular among those who love massages.
This will not stain your bed and pillow sheets, an
advantage that most people like about this type. And this can also be stored for a long time without becoming bland.
Jojoba Oil
We may be hearing of such
material being used in beauty products like soap and lotions. This is because jojoba oil has healing effects especially for
those who have back acne.
This can be absorbed well by your skin so you must reapply during the process. This cost more than the almond
and coconut oil, but the extra bucks will be worth the soothing effects it will give you.
Still pondering what massage oil will fit
your aromatherapy session? You may want to try some or try them all. There are still many other choices that you will find
once you seek such types of oil. All these aim for one thing, to make your massages worthwhile.
Massage using essential oils in aromatherapy
Aromatherapy massage is
a kind of massage using essential oils incorporated to the conventional massage lotions or oil. The only difference from regular
massage is the use of essential oils and yet that simple distinction makes regular massage and aromatherapy massage worlds
apart. The reason is in the oils.
Essential oils contain natural chemical compounds that get transmitted through our noses when we
inhale the aroma of the essential oils. As these chemical molecules reach the limbic system of the brain, our mood, emotions,
and state of mind and well-being are affected, often times resulting in a relaxed and rejuvenated state.
The limbic system of the brain functions
as a control tower for human emotions, as well as the nervous system, and the body's hormones.
If we combine the effects of essential
oils with the techniques of different kinds of massages, we get something that benefits not only our inner well being but
our physical condition as well.
Aside from the scents emitted by essential oils, it is believed the properties of the oil that makes them
therapeutic can be absorbed through the skin. However, care must be taken when applying amounts of essential oils on the skin.
Pure essential oils can cause irritations for others and can lead to complications if not properly addressed.
Nevertheless, with the
right additives, mainly carrier oils, the maximum benefits of essential oils in aromatherapy massage will be attained.
Among the more popular
blends of essential oils used in aromatherapy massage includes chamomile, lavender and geranium oils which are used primarily
to clam ones state of mind, relieving the stressful environment hovering someone who worries a lot or is show aggressive behaviors
all the time.
Rosemary
oil is good to energize and cleanse the body. If, however, one needs more than just to be re- energized, the essential oils
from clary sage, rose and neroli are good for uplifting the soul.
Aromatherapy massage, just like any other massages is not for everyone. Those
with open wounds, rashes, or any skin disease is not advised to have aromatherapy massage, or any kind of massage for that
matter.
The
contact and pressure on the skin will cause more pain and trouble than relief. Likewise, those who have
undergone surgery, chemotherapy, people with heart diseases, and pregnant women are definitely on this list.
Aromatherapy massage is
great for removing the everyday stress and is especially great for the piled-up stress from work and other pressures from
our daily lives. It is also being recommended for people with headaches, back pain, digestive problems, and premenstrual syndrome.
Out of the box aromatherapy
For most of us who undergo
aromatherapy treatment, we often resort to aromatherapy massages and therapeutic baths. To us, it is the best way to relax
and re-energize. However, there are some aromatherapy techniques that can be considered out of the box ideas.
Although, most of the
methods you'll be reading below are considered ordinary tricks of the trade, to common folds who know better, these methods
can be considered as truly out of the box ideas.
In massage aromatherapy, the essential oils are being applied on the skin. The components of the
oil go through the skin and are absorbed into the body. Supposedly the natural compounds will give the body that rejuvenated
feel.
The
same goes with therapeutic baths. The body absorbs the essential oils aroma through a prepared bath where the oils are added.
You only need a few drop or so of pure essential oil to get that relaxing bath.
Can you believe that essential oils can also be used
as insect repellants? There are oils, such as lavender, peppermint and citronella which are great to get rid of those pesky
insects. But, when using pure essential oils it is not advisable to apply them directly on the skin. By doing so, skin irritations
are quite possible.
So
instead, you can use essential oils to repel insects by placing wet tissue ball, cotton balls, or a piece of cloth wet with
essential oils.
Other
usage includes using essential oils in making a compress for medical purposes and as a kind of hair treatment. It does seem
to be getting weirder by the minute. But using essential oils and aromatherapy techniques in making a compress does help relieve
muscular and rheumatic pains as well as swelling.
Dry and greasy hair can be helped by using aromatherapy's essential oils. You need to dilute
the essential oil in base oil first before applying them to your hair. Some of the more common oils for treating the hair
include rosemary and chamomile, bergamot, lavender and tea leaves.
Some even use essential oils diluted in proper proportions as a natural mouth
wash which targets oral infections and problems like infected gums and even mouth ulcers. However, you should remember that
essential oils are not supposed to be swallowed. So be careful.
Furthermore, by employing the same technique as that in aromatherapy massage
which is basically mixing the essential oils with base oils, the mixture can be used as a lotion or even face cream. The key,
of course, is choosing which essential oil to be used.
It is certain that other out of the box aromatherapy techniques are out there.
As we continue to use aromatherapy in our daily lives, the number of uses will increase and the uniqueness of each usage as
well.
Popular
essential oils for aromatherapy
As you might already know, aromatherapy is a kind of relaxation and rejuvenation technique that employs the
aroma of various essential oils. Different blends of essential oils exist to complement unique individuals and certain situations.
There are
however, several simple, basic, and you-can-never-can-go-wrong blends which one can use in aromatherapy.
First, lets take a quick look at the
basic element that makes aromatherapy: essential oils. Why essential oils?
Essential oils are taken from natural
products. They contain hormones and vitamins that are responsible for chemical reactions in the brain that help us feel relaxed
and renewed.
Now,
as was mentioned earlier, essential oil blends will help determine what kind of effect one desires from an aromatherapy session.
Aromatherapy combined with essential oils can help you relax, eliminate muscle pains, and sooth pains.
For relieving pains, it seems oils from
clove buds, frankincense chamomile, lavender, and lemongrass are quite popular and effective. Chamomile oil is also good for
relaxations. The same goes with essential oils derived from lavender, lemon eucalyptus, myrtle, clary sage,
lemon verbena, marjoram, and lemon balm.
For headaches, it has been found that inhaling essential oils from lavender,
peppermint, basil, chamomile, and lemongrass help relieve the pain. Meanwhile, for lowering blood pressure, the following
oils were found to be quite effective: lemon balm oil, tangerine oil, rose oil, clary sage oil, ylang ylang,
and geranium oils.
You
can also learn to blend these different oils to get a unique aroma. The trick is to combine oils from the same group. If you
intend to use oils of floral origins then the best thing to do is mix together two floral based oils, lavender and rose, for
example. Just be careful when mixing essential oils.
Remember to use porcelain bowls or glass ones since the oils will react with plastic and rubber.
Also, make sure to add carrier oils and not use the pure essential oils for this might result to irritations.
Popular essential oils
in aromatherapy are quite easy to come by so you won't have any problems acquiring them. However, not all essential oil
products are natural. Some are synthetic and contain artificial chemicals that do not provide therapeutic effects. Among these
synthetic or artificial ingredients are fragrance oils.
These fragrance oils are synthetic chemical components that do not provide
any useful benefit and are thus any product claiming as such is dubious and deceitful to consumers. It is best, therefore,
to go to a respected and reputable store where products are guaranteed.
Precautions in using essential oils in aromatherapy
Aromatherapy has been known to relieve
stress and to even ease muscle pains and headaches. But before you join the bandwagon and get into the candles and the oils,
you must first remember that what you are dealing with can also be dangerous if you do not practice caution.
The heart of aromatherapy
lies in the use of essential oils, which provides the scent or the aroma that you whiff to relax your body. These oils come
from plants. They are extracted from the different parts like the leaves, the roots, the buds and even in some, the peelings
of the fruits.
But
like any natural item, some of these oils can be extracted from plants that are toxic and poisonous. This means that you may
be inhaling the aroma of a toxic substance!
But of course, this rarely happens. There are consumer and product guidelines that are being followed
when it comes to the manufacturing of these essential oils for aromatherapy.
Also, it is important to take note of how much you need to put into a candle
or into diffuser. Remember that too much may not be good especially if too concentrated amounts have an impact.
In fact, many essential
oils can be irritating to the skin when applied in too concentrated amounts. When using these oils, dilute them first in a
carrier oil or even in water before applying to your skin.
Of course there exceptions to this rule. Lavender and Tea Tree, for instance,
are made for the skin. In fact, they can be applied directly to the skin because of their mildness. These oils can treat minor
burns and skin eruptions.
If you are however very sensitive and your skin reacts quickly to a foreign substance, it is good to perform
first a patch tests wherein you will apply a small amount of the oil in a small area of the skin.
You can use those parts of the skin that
are hidden by clothes just in case allergies occur. Among the areas where you can do the patch test are on the upper chest
area, the back, or at the crook of your arm. It will probably take about 12 hours for the skin to react.
So just wait. If swelling, redness and
rashes appear, then the concentration is too much. Just try to dilute it before using it on the skin or for aromatherapy.
Reaping the benefits of
aromatherapy
Basically,
aromatherapy refers to the procedure that uses essential oils and aims to bring notable changes in a person's mood or
body. With the use of essential oils which are derived from various plants and their parts that are believed to have therapeutic
properties aromatherapy continues to be adapted by more and more people across the globe because of its numerous benefits.
What's in essential
oils?
Essential
oils are the primary medium that are used in aromatherapy. To be able to gain success in the procedure, it is a must that
the person conducting it has a wide knowledge about aromatherapy to avoid further complications and accidents.
For those that are new
to aromatherapy, it is better to educate yourselves to various plant derivations of essential oils and the benefits they could
bring.
For
muscle aches and pains, as well as in various respiratory system problems, eucalyptus is recommended because it has properties
that greatly help breathing.
For extreme menstruation, lung problems, urinary complaints, and stomach difficulties as well as in treating
skin problems and conditions such as acne, boils, and even scars, frankincense is recommended.
To relieve conditions that are stress-related
such as nervous tension as well as skin conditions like eczema, cuts, and burns, geranium is ideal because it has high balancing
properties that are good for the skin. Jasmine, on the other hand, is ideal for relaxation and intoxication specifically acting
as aphrodisiac but aside from that, it is also good in treating various skin conditions.
For problems in the respiratory system, rheumatism,
cramps in the abdomen area, sprains, depression, sleeplessness, as well as for treating various skin conditions, lavender
is the best. Patchouli, on the other, is quite beneficial on solving skin problems such as infections and irritations as well
as in treating addiction and other tension-related problems.
Peppermint is believed to be ideal in dealing with asthmatics as well as to
people with frequent nausea, colic problems, colds, headaches, cramps, fevers, and other mental fatigues, while rose is usually
used to heal a capillaries that are broken, improve poor circulation as well as in treating various skin conditions.
Other effective essential
oils are derived from rosemary for treating mental fatigue as well as other circulatory and muscular problems; sandalwood
for relaxation and moisturizing the skin; sweet orange for improving poor circulation, muscular tension, being obese, and
tension-related conditions; and tea tree for improve skin health because of its strong anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties.
The list of essential
oils can go on and on. But to ensure its success, make sure that you educate yourself on the proper application of these oils.
Relaxing through your
nose in aromatherapy
Relaxing
through your nose is one way of putting it. It may sound too simplistic to some but in essence that's the way aromatherapy
works. Aromatherapy works by attaching physical, mental, and even emotional levels of concern.
You see the first element
of aromatherapy is how the aroma or scents of the essential oils influence our brain. Through the olfactory nerves in our
nose, the aroma travels up and to the limbic system of the brain.
I don't exactly what goes inside that area, but basically, the aroma from the
essential oils functions like a catalyst that makes the brain release certain chemicals that create a feeling of well being.
This goes to show how
complex our sense of smell is. We have five senses, and there are times that we prefer not being able to smell rather than
being blind or being deaf. But the truth of the matter is, having no sense of smell accounts to having the same disability
as losing the other senses.
If our tongue influences the way we eat, our sense of smell is responsible for us enjoying that singular moment.
Without our sense of smell, we cannot truly enjoy the sweetness of candies, the bitterness of chocolates, or even the sourness
of home-made Italian pasta.
This goes without saying that our sense of smell is a vital key in aromatherapy. The aromas that we inhale
from a blend of essential oils offer both psychological and physical benefits.
It is believed that the natural chemicals in the essential
oils can be absorbed through the aroma by the lungs and distributed throughout the body resulting to some physical benefits.
Essential oils can be
used or applied on the skin as well. Although, this procedure can be quite unsafe when done improperly, the benefits of applying
essential oils on ones skin is for physical benefit and can improve the physical health, appearance and even the constitution
of an individual.
The
proper way of using essential oils for applications like massage and therapeutic baths is by the mixing it with carrier oils
like sweet almond and apricot kernel oils.
Combined with different techniques of relaxation and treatments, like massages, shiatsu, acupressure,
reflexology, or light therapy, aromatherapy becomes a powerful technique to achieve positive results from treatments.
Aromatherapy or relaxing
through your nose is known to relieve stress related pains, depression, anxiety, insomnia, menstrual cramps, and even panic
disorders.
Resourcefulness
in making aromatherapy products
Of all the forms of alternative healing, aromatherapy is one of the most popular choices. This is because
aromatherapy can bring about positive effects not only on their physical being but in their emotional and physical being as
well.
Those
who are new to aromatherapy are advised to rely on the experts before using any product. But, for those people who have been
studying aromatherapy for quite some time now, they should proceed to another level by creating their own aromatherapy products.
Once they
try to experiment on things using their knowledge and experience in aromatherapy, they can customize products for themselves.
They can save lots of money because they don't need to buy aromatherapy products that can be quite expensive and can earn
money as well if they try to sell their homemade and personalized products.
Before you try coming up with your very own aromatherapy products, you need
not only extensive knowledge about them but also the supplies needed such as measuring items like spoons and cups, laboratory
apparatus like pipettes and stirring rods, containers and different sizes of funnels.
Once you have all these, you may now proceed
to creating your own aromatherapy products.
The following are just some of the aromatherapy products that you can start working on:
1. Aromatherapy mouth
products. These may include mouthwashes, gargles, and throat sprays that can kill odor-causing bacteria that thrive inside
the mouth. It can also treat minor mouth and throat problems. What you need for a simple aromatherapy gargle or spray is 1/2
teaspoon of salt dissolves in 1/4 cup water.
You can mix it with 1/2 drop of essential oil that has antiseptic and anti-bacterial properties like
tea tree oil. Once you're done mixing everything together, shake or stir it using a rod and put in a sealed container.
2. Aromatherapy salve.
These can be primarily used to treat skin problems and conditions such swelling, scrapes, bruises, cuts, rashes, and insect
bites as well as major skin disorders like psoriasis and eczema.
You can make your own aromatherapy salve by stirring at least 30 drops of your
chosen essential oil with 2 ounces of plain salve. Using a toothpick, you should mix them both together so the salve can absorb
the properties of the essential oil.
3. Aromatherapy liniment. Liniments are known to be great in aiding circulation especially when rubbed
on the affected area of the body. These are used to minimize pains in the muscle and joints by warming the affected nerves.
You can
make your own aromatherapy liniment by mixing at least 30 drops of your chosen essential oils with alcohol, vegetable oil,
and vinegar.
Safety
tips in using essential oils in aromatherapy
Aromatherapy may be so easy to do. You just buy some diffusers or candles and then some essential
oils and voila, you have for yourself a therapy that can help you relax and get rid of those headaches and those strange aches
and pains in your body.
Essential
oils in aromatherapy come from natural sources. These oils are extracted from plants different parts including the leaves,
the roots, the bark, the branches, and even the fruit peels. But like many natural ingredients, dangers can happen when plant
sources that are poisonous and toxic are chosen for extraction.
Some plants may not be toxic when in small amounts but like medicines, it can
be hazardous when inhaled in concentrated amounts. That is why experts recommend that you use different scents. Do not stick
to just one essential oil for everyday use. Alternate three or four varieties. That way, you can also get the benefits that
different essential oils offer.
Also, there is also potential harm when these essential oils are left undiluted for long periods of time.
If you use essential oils regularly, you won't have much problem. But if you stock them up for long periods of time and then
remember to use them again, better buy a new one.
It is also a good idea to buy small vials instead of big ones. That way, you can save your money
and also save essential oils from turning bad.
The use of toxic plant sources of course only happen rarely. There are manufacturing and product
guidelines that are being followed. And if you are careful of buying from sources that are not reputable, you should be safe.
Make sure
also that the oils that you are purchasing are pure and unaltered. These are product seals that you can look into to ensure
that what you are buying is safe and authentic.
When it comes to using too much amount of essential oils, this can be avoided by making sure that
you read the instructions and follow it to the letter. If the instructions say a drop, put just a drop of the essential oil.
Do not exceed the amount even if you feel that the smell is not as strong for your liking.
Remember that these instructions are written
there for a reason. Besides, in order for these essential oils and the aromatherapy to be really effective in relieving stress
and helping the body get rid of its psychosomatic pains, there is a specific concentration of the essential oils that should
be met.
Safety
concerns in aromatherapy
Aromatherapy can be a very relaxing and pampering treat for you especially if you live a stressful and busy
life. Using aromatherapy products such as essential oils, candles, bath and body products and the like will definitely give
you a soothing experience only if you know how to use them properly.
Since aromatherapy products contain essential oils that are highly flammable,
make sure that you conduct thorough research first before using any of these. The following are some of the safety tips you
can use to ensure that you will not encounter any accident or complication when using aromatherapy products.

oils. To avoid skin complications such as rashes or burns, make sure that you use the proper amount of essential oil. To know
how much you should use on application or in diffusion, make sure that you read the label carefully. You can also ask from
experts or aroma therapists if you know any.
2. Never use undiluted essential oils directly on skin. Since essential oils contain pure plant extracts
and other ingredients, it can be harmful to the skin. Before using any essential oil or products that have essential oils,
make sure that you have your skin checked first by a reputable dermatologist or skin expert.
By doing this, you will have an assessment
on your own skin and you will know which ones are harmful to and those that are not.
3. Know your skin type and your allergic reactions.
Every individual has different reactions to certain chemicals. This is especially true in using essential oils and other aromatherapy
products this is because some oils cause allergic reactions to sensitive skin.
The basic skin test that you can do especially when
using essential oils for the first time is place a small amount of diluted oil parts of the body that have sensitive skin
such as the wrist or arms. If there is a reaction like rashes or redness, don't use it because chances are, you have an allergic
reaction to the product.
4. Pregnant women should not use essential oils. Although not all essential oils and aromatherapy products
contain harmful elements, it is best to not use any of these to avoid complications with the fetus. Always remember that essential
oils are quickly absorbed by the body and go directly to the bloodstream.
People with other health conditions should also veer away from using essential
oils and other aromatherapy products without consulting an expert or their physicians.

The essence of Aromatherapy
When you say aromatherapy, you immediately think of lighting scented candles or putting potpourri
into a basin. But what you did not know is that these candles and potpourris have essential oils that provide them with the
essential properties that make aromatherapy such a hit; the scent.
Essential oils are said to be the heart and soul of aromatherapy. This is perhaps
because it is the one that provides the main material used in this process. Essential oils are found in plants. From its roots
to its fruits, essential oils are in their different parts.
In fact, there are some plants that can provide you with different essential
oils. Others can only give you one scent although the oils can be extracted in different parts of the plants.
Quality of the essential
oil extracted
Despite
coming from natural plant sources, essential oils have different quality. Like many products, some are better than others.
Quality of the essential oils will depend on the plant source, how it was grown, the climate where it was grown and the condition
of the soil.
For
instance, a plant source that is grown organically will give better quality essential oils than the plants which were sprayed
with pesticides or had industrial chemicals put into it. Another factor that can affect the quality is how it is harvested
as well as the process used during extraction.
Methods of extraction
Oils can be extracted in different methods. There is the steam distillation which is the most common.
Another is the cold pressed method, which is often done with citrus plants and nuts. Solvent extracted method, on the other
hand, is often used when extracting oils from plants like jasmine and rose, whose oils are found in flower petals.
This is harder to distill.
That is why the solvent extracted are often used. A newer process called the super-critical carbon dioxide extraction method
is being introduced in the industry but only a few make use of it.
Essential oils benefits
Essential oils are known as relaxants. It relieves the body its tension and
oftentimes times muscle pains. In fact, studies have shown that aromatherapy and essential oils can help in distressing individuals
and in relieving psychosomatic problems.

body fight off infections and illnesses.

The wonders of essential oils in aromatherapy
History tells that even before the dawn of
modern civilization, essential oils have been derived and used to heal, relax, and restore people. In fact, the first civilizations
from Egypt are believed to have administered the use of these essential oils in their everyday lives.
But due to the discovery of modern healing
in the medical field this practice through the use of scents has slowly disappeared.
But, with the trend of going back to basics in the
fitness world, healing through essential oils has regained its place. Blended with the term "aromatherapy," essential
oils now play an important role in holistic therapy not only the body but the mind and emotions as well.
In fact, essential oils are believed
to be present in almost all aromatic products like essence oils, absolutes, resinoids, and concretes.
Why essential oils are important in aromatherapy
Basically, aromatherapy
involves the use of pure essential and absolute oils that are derived from different plants gathered across the globe. These
oils are known to have varying degrees of fragrance, complexity, and volatility are and each type is believed to emulsify
and contain a certain aromatic energy.
Today, one of the latest trends in terms of aromatherapy healing is the utilization of highly and
carefully selected fragrant substances called "essential oils." These oils are now being integrated to aromatherapy
by combining them with lotions and other inhalants so as to promote health by affecting a person's mood.
Usually administered through massages,
the use of essential oils in aromatherapy has become quite popular in almost all parts of the world. This is because people
believe that the therapeutic properties of essential oils will be absorbed directly by the person's blood stream through his
or her skin.
Aside
from using essential oils in aromatherapy through massage, they are also used in other forms such as hot and cold compress
or mixed with lukewarm water in baths. One of the most creative ways of using essential oils in aromatherapy is through inhaling.
Here, specially
designed diffusers are being used which enable essential oils to condense into thin air and inhaled directly by the person
to calm his or her senses.
Aside from numerous spas and fitness centers, essential oils through aromatherapy are now also being adapted
by hospitals and other health care establishments. This is because even the people in the medical field are somehow convinced
that these oils can greatly help relieve stress and depression among patients.
In most cases, aromatherapy through the use of essential
oils even helps patients to tolerate or control the pain they feel brought on by medication or medical operations.
Apart from taking advantage
of its soothing and therapeutic properties, aromatherapy, through the use of essential oils, are also being used to treat
various skin problems while reducing the effects of the specific disease.
Tips in buying and using aromatherapy candles
Today, there are so many aromatherapy products
that are available. But, among all these products, one item remains the "most brought" aromatherapy product on the
market; the aromatherapy candles.
The popularity of aromatherapy candles can be attributed to their efficiency, affectivity, and wide

they are much cheaper and easy to use.
For people who are designs and styles, aromatherapy candles are also perfect because there are literally
thousands of colors and sizes to choose from.

If you are using it as
an aphrodisiac, choose scents that have sensual properties such as jasmine. For a complete list of essential oils and their
purposes, use Gill Farrer-Halls' "The Aromatherapy Bible: The Definitive Guide to Using Essential Oils" as a reference.
2. Check the label to
make sure that you are buying authentic ones. The affectivity of aromatherapy candles also depends on the amount of essential
oils present in the candle.
When buying, make sure that the candle is labeled as "aromatherapy candle" and not as "scented
candle" to ensure that you can get its therapeutic benefits once you lit them up.
3. Always keep an eye on the aromatherapy when
using it. Although aromatherapy candles can be quite inexpensive, it can cost you your fortune if you are not careful in using
it. Make sure that you keep an eye on the candle all the time once you light it up to avoid fires and other accidents.
Also, make sure that aromatherapy
candles are out of children's reach so they won't be able to play with it especially if you are not around.

money as well as the results that you want to achieve. The following are some helpful guidelines before and during buying
those aromatherapy products.
1. Make sure that you know what to purchase. Knowing what you need before going to a store or in online shops
is very crucial. This is because it will help you to stick with the original item that you have in mind. Before buying, you
must ask yourself what are the things that you truly need for your aromatherapy sessions and list them down.
Having notes before and
during buying aromatherapy products can veer you away from getting distracted in other items that you will see. You can list
down a specific essential oil or a brand name that you trust.
2. Always conduct research before buying. With so many products in the aromatherapy
market right now, you can easily get distracted with items that you don't really need. To know what aromatherapy products
that you need, it is always best to conduct research that will contain information on various types of essential oils and
their benefits.
You
can also add information such as specific labels and places where you can buy the aromatherapy products that you need.
3. Be meticulous about
the places you are getting them from. Knowing where to buy is easy but knowing from whom to buy is not. Today, aromatherapy
products are available just about everywhere from the supermarket, health shops, drug stores, cosmetic stalls, and even online
shops.
Although
they are all considered aromatherapy products, not all of them can pass the strict guidelines of an authentic item that has
true beneficial effects. For beginners, it is always best to buy aromatherapy products at licensed aromatherapy stores such
as herb stores and health shops.
But since they are placed in exclusive malls, these can be more expensive. If you know what to buy,
then you can look for aromatherapy products in other stores.
4. Double check the label of any aromatherapy product. This is very crucial
especially in essential oils because many people mistake them for "perfume oils" that don't really have therapeutic
properties and benefits.
Always be meticulous in buying aromatherapy essential oils so you don't waste money on items that you can't
benefit from.
Uses
of aromatherapy and essential oils
Aromatherapy has become one of the most popular ways to relieve stress in recent years. While before,
nobody has heard of this before, now aromatherapy candles and essential oils are all over the place. Aromatherapy is now even
used in office buildings to relax employees, coffee shops and restaurants for the ambiance and even inside the home.
Essential oils are perhaps
the backbone of aromatherapy. These are things that provide the fragrance and the essence of the process. What is great about
these essential oils, you don't have to buy much. Just a drop of these oils and you are ready to go. Here are some of the
uses of essential oils that you may not know about yet.
1. Besides relieving stress, aromatherapy and its essential oils are very effective
for calming the nerves and stopping anxiety. It is also known to help relieve muscular and rheumatic pains although not much
medical research has been done on this.
2. To ward away ants from getting into your food, use lemon or peppermint essential oils on the door
frames of your cupboard or around your table.
3. You can make an air freshener out of an essential oil by dropping a few drops into a spray bottle
with water. Shake the bottle and then spray on polished surfaces. This will give scent to its surface and fill up the room.
4. Make your own cabinet
fragrance with an essential oil in cotton balls. Place it in a corner and then close the cupboards. You will find that the
scent will emanate from the interior.
5. Essential oils particularly lavender can help ease headaches and muscle pains. Just rub a drop
of the oil onto your temples and then massage.
6. Give lasting scent to your clothes. While they are in the dryer, put a drop of essential oil into
it. The dryer will help set the scent into the clothes.
7. Ordinary candles can turn into aromatherapy candles when dropped
with some essential oils. Do this before you light it though.
8. Use a drop of your essential oil to revive old potpourri that has lost its
fragrance. You can even choose the fragrance that you want and perhaps even mix and match the scent.
9 Got really bad smelling shoes? You
can freshen them up with the use of lemon or geranium oils. You can leave it overnight to make the effect more lasting. After
all aromatherapy is not just for the body, it can also be for your shoes.
Using Aromatherapy essential oils
Essential oil is one of the most basic ingredients
in an aromatherapy kit. This after all is the one that provides the scent or the aroma that is said to relax the nerves and
de-stress the person. In fact, aromatherapy wouldn't be aromatherapy without these oils. Some people even buy more than one
type of essential oils.
They go for different scents depending on their mood for that day. This practice is actually encouraged as
each essential oil can have their own benefits and effects. Also, too much of something can also be bad for the health. So
it is best that you alternate between three or four scents to avoid desensitization.
Essential oils come from plants. Unlike fragrant oils,
which are chemical based, essential oils are extracted from naturally-growing plants. Oils may be found in different areas
in the plants, from the branches and leaves, to the buds and the fruits. Some can even find oils in the roots.
But because it is natural,
there are also some cases when it can also be dangerous and hazardous to the health, especially when inhaled too much or when
mistakenly taken from a poisonous plant. Remember, drugs like marijuana actually come from plants themselves.
That is why in using essential
oils in aromatherapy, caution must be observed. Here are some tips on how to keep safe and yet get the most out of your essential
oils.
Store
properly
Essential
oils can also go stale. So if you have bottles of oils that you have not used for 2 years, throw them away. When stored properly,
essential oils can last for just a year. If not, even less than that.
The first thing to remember when storing essential oils is to always keep the
bottle sealed tight. Oils can also evaporate and it can also get contaminated. It is also recommended that you store them
in a cool dry place. Do not expose it to direct heat.
Use in moderation
Essential oils must only be used in moderation. This means that do not overuse it when you don't
need it. The same goes with putting too much on the candles or diffusers, or using more than what was indicated in the manual.
Follow the
instructions to the letter. Even though essential oils are natural, they can still be potent. Some oils may even be more potent
when used in large amounts. So be careful when using these essential oils in aromatherapy.
